Documenting learning disabilities

An accommodation is an adjustment to an activity or setting that removes a barrier presented by a disability so students may have equal access to the same opportunities available to students without disabilities.  Some of the most common disabilities that may affect testing performance include:

  • ADHD
  • Autism Spectrum Disorders
  • Head Injuries
  • Learning Disorders
  • Severe Anxiety Disorders

For the documentation to be useful to most educational and examination organizations it should:

  1. Provide a diagnosis that is clearly and clinically stated
  2. The information must be current
  3. The individual’s education, development, and medical history is presented and put in context to the impairment
  4. Any determination filed is adequately supported
  5. Demonstrate that there is a functional limitation stated and any recommendations for accommodation is appropriately justified.
  6. The evaluators have professional credentials, and experience necessary to make any final determinations.
